You really have to hit the mountains to go 4-wheeling. There are easy trails around Idaho Springs, Georgetown, Boulder, Buena Vista, Leadville, Vail, Central City, etc.
You may want to get the following books:
Guide to Colorado Backroad driving adventures and Northern Colorado Backroad driving adventures.
They list the trails by difficulty level so once you're comfortable with the easy trails you could move up to moderate and maybe you'll even want to attempt a difficult one.

Just go to Moab. It's not too far away, it's worth the trip.
