I'm not an archiver. I don't make libraries of tapes. Once I got my TiVo Series 1 6 1/2 years ago, my VCR just gathered dust.
I upgraded my TiVo to have a much larger hard drive so it was rare that I couldn't just save something for a long period of time. But with an HD plasma, I now record everything in Best mode which significantly reduces the total recording time.
I currently have a Comcast HD DVR as well. The main downside is limited recording time for HD. I also am not happy with some usability issues. But, unlike D-VHS tape, I can record two shows at once and watch a third, pre-recorded show. Which typically satisfies my time-shifting needs.
Once the TiVo Series 3 HD DVR comes out later this year, the Comcast HD DVR is getting the boot and I'll have two TiVos. The big advantage of the TiVo Series 3 is that you can attach an external SATA drive. And if Weaknees or other third parties offer mods, we could be looking at TiVos with a terabyte of storage or more. It'll be interesting to see if the you can have several external drives. You could keep all of your Lost on one and Sopranos on another and ...
And then there could be TiVoToGo and the possibility of burning an HD show to Blu-ray DVD or HD-DVD. Currently TiVo Series 2 plus TiVoToGo supports archiving shows to DVD. If archiving is what you need and HD TiVoToGo works, again, why tape? I haven't seen any specifics on this yet. But what if?
To each his or her own ... but I just cannot for the life of me see going back to tape. Ever.

I have Hi Def TiVo, but sometimes wish I had D-VHS because there are some recordings I would like to save indefinitely. However, I can't see going back to tapes! Eventually recordable Hi Def DVD will be available, and that's what I'll go for.
