I always gently rubbed their backs. Worked on both my sons. Still does, even with the 19 year old! I just wondered how I would like to be awakened and used that idea with them.

i usually rub there back and quietly say there name. the only problem is that you have a good chance that the baby will not want to nurse and even if the baby latches on may fall asleep several times. i always found it easy to make sure they have a routine as far as sleep and eating and then work around there routine, everything else just had to wait.

mommy of 2

I was able to pick my son up out of his bed, nurse him while he slept and then lay him back down. He'd wake up only to change sides. It would take him about an hour to eat (1/2 hr each side) b/c he was sleeping the whole time, so be patient. HTH.

When I was nursing my lactation consultant suggested I strip my baby down to nothing but a diaper to wake and then nurse skin to skin.

Why would you want to wake a sleeping baby???
If you mean to feed them before you go to sleep you can do a dream feed - If you offer the baby a feed while she/he is still asleep chances are she'll take it! I used to do this with my son!

I have found that waking them up and then changing their diaper really makes them alert fast! But, I'm tellin ya, a sleeping baby is a blessing, so I wouldn't push it if I were you! LOL :)

Put your hand on the baby's back and softly talk to the baby, then put baby up to your face talk, sing (Good Morning Mary Sunshine is good) and cuddle the baby, this works for me. Every child also enjoys You Are My Sunshine.

well you should never wake a baby unless YOU MUST
but if you must, what i do is i gently give my son kisses on his face and talk to him in a light whispering voice.
