Whatever you do don't take CENTRUM. Its a good sign your doctor didn't recommend it. If you want to see the seedy details as to why not to take this essentially toxic non-vitamin go to www.centrumistoxic.com.
On a more positive note, the whole food supplements are the way to go. Mega Food, Garden of Life, and New Chapter are at the cutting edge of nutrition by providing entirely biogrown or plant grown forms of vitamins and minerals, in their naturally occuring ratios, with all the essential cofactors needed for both nutrient absorption and utilization. Both Tufts and Scranton University have demonstrated the superiority of whole food nutrients over synthetic isolates. Its really common sense. For millions of years organisms have gotten their nutrition from FOOD. Only in the last half a decade has that changed. Ascorbic acid, for instance, is a by product of the 32 step chemical transformation of starch into what is essentially a biologically inert, if not potentially toxic, analogue to what is found in, say, an orange. Vitamin C is a food complex, and not a dead chemical. Taking ascorbic acid, in effect, is like taking white sugar instead of eating fruit. The over 100,000 phytonutrients science has so far discovered can not be reproduced synthetically in a laboratory by God-scientists. Mother Nature is the one who has always nourished us, and is the only one who can create "intelligent" and "living" nutrients through conformational chelation.

many good vitamins are available, just check at the store and get a general multivitamin with iron, and there are vitamins available for men and womens health.
Just a hint if you are one of those people that vitamins make you belch or burp and taste funny take your vitamin at night before you go to bed. Also take your vitamin, if it has iron in it with orange juice will allow your body to break the vitamin down and your body to use the vitamin..
Does not work with grapefruit juice..
Eat healthy and drink lots of water

Nature Made (found at most drugstores and supermarkets) makes an excellent one at a reasonable price that doesn't contain any food coloring or additives. I'm allergic to all colorings and so many of them contain themt. Catch a buy one get one free sale and you'll save tons.

I take Stresstabs with Zinc. They seem to be doing alright for me. If you are a kid, the Flintstones was a good answer too.

Liquid vitamins generally work better. Most pills have so much binders and fillers that they never get aborbed.
