Why has research on anomie theory been criticized?

1. Critics claim that the destructiveness, versatility, zest and wholesale negativism which characterizes the delinquent sub-culture are beyond the purview of this theory. Thus, some anomie supporters have said that the theory of anomie is only designed to account for some, but not all forms of deviant behavior customarily described as delinquent or criminal

2. Some have criticized the theory for being too individualistic in its description of the adaptations to strain.

3. One of the biggest criticisms is the ambiguity with regard to the meanings behind the terms employed by the theory. An example is the “double meaning” given to the concept “legitimate means”. It is not clear if this refers to a need for equal opportunity through legitimate means to actually reach the desired end or just equal opportunity to try to reach the desired ends. Some also criticize the theory for never fully quantifying concepts so that the theory might be properly tested. With all of the minor reformulations and extended discussions on anomie theory, certain concepts remain unclear.

4. A final criticism is that there is a false logic in basing programs, such as Mobilization for Youth, on the theory. Strain theory does not predict that more opportunity would lead to less crime. So programs that were based on a proposition of “more opportunity” may have been misguided from inception.
