i dont support congress wasting time on an issue like this when i lost my job due to outsourcing, cant get another one due to illegal immigrants, dont have any health insurance, have to pay somone to do my taxes cause its such a mess, my kids can barely read and write the schools here suck, soldiers are dying over in iraq and the price of gas here is still too high, we have no workable plans to run this country any where but into the ground, and most of the people in this world hate us anyway. So, if they want to waste time taking away our right to free speech, i dont support that. that said, if they do pass it, they will just give that much more publicity to those who burn it to protest whatever they are protesting, and since we cant even keep meth dealers and criminals in most jails due to overcrowding, what good is another law gonna do.

No. i'm no longer likely specific what to think of of gay Marriage, yet I *do no longer* help amending the form to evade the States from identifying in the event that they opt to permit marriage. Nor ought to the form be used to shrink a skill good.

Yes I support it for one reason, The amendment would give the states the power to decide if they will have have laws against flag burning which translated means that it would be for the people to decide not the supreme court. I personally don't like flag burning, When I see someone burning the flag I think about all the caskets came back draped with the flag. I also think about the Chinese government killing students in cold blood because they wanted freedom.

Absolutely not. It is my opinion that the single most important legislation that makes America what it is, is the First Amendment. The second we start chiseling away at the right to freedom of speech/expression, or any other right contained in the First Amendment, we start destroying America. Burning the flag is an expression that is protected by the First Amendment.

Trish, hon, let's have a re-read shall we?
Anyhoo... Where on the one hand I find flag burning appalling and anyone who does it, no friend of mine.
Still the right to protest even the most guarded elements of our government and it's symbols, is a right I would not be comfortable living without.
Ya see it's starts small or in easily favored changes--- we're not taking away your rights, we're just fixin' some things. We all agree that burning a symbol of our country -a method we have used to honor our servicemen and women through our country's history--- hey this is an easy decision correct? that we just make that a crime right? you all agree don't you? you're a patriot aren't you? You support our troops, don't you?
But it doesn't end there, other changes will be made, other liberties will be lost, and the time when we were freaked out by them happily tapping our phones without warrants, will be remembered as the tiniest of trespasses.

I guess a support it. Yes, I am an American but I don't look at the flag as if it is the best thing in the world. I would never burn a flag because I find that vulgar, and I guess I agree that it could cause some overly patriotic people to start a revolt.

Absolutely. Detractors of the amendment will tell you that it is a matter of freedom of speech.
Yet those very same people will tell you that you cannot Merry Christmas - you have to say Happy Holidays - because it offends some people.
Those very same people will tell you that you cannot call anyone black or white or Indian - you have to use African-American or Causasian or Native American - because it offends some people.
Those very same people will tell you that you cannot say chairman - you have to use chairperson or chairwoman - because it might offend some people.
Well, burning the flag offends me. Really offends me. I have dedicated my life to the military and protecting the American way of life. Hundreds of thousands have given their LIVES fighting for the American way of life ... and are repaid because adults acting like little children think that they can change anyone's mind or point of view by desecrating the very symbol of liberty and freedom that so many have fought and died for.
It never ceases to amaze me how bad some people think we have it in America. They have never been to the places I have been where people REALLY have it bad. The slums of Asia and South America. Mass graves in Bosnia. The true dictatorships of the middle east. If they could see these things with their own eyes, they would NEVER complain about "how bad things are" back home. They would get down on their hands and knees and kiss the very ground that comprises the United States.
So, I ask people who think we should be able to burn the flag - who is it okay to offend and who's speech is it okay to abridge? Anyones? Everyones? Or just those that do not agree with you ... Think about it.
EDIT: For all of you who claim "free speech", keep in mind that while you can say whatever you feel, there is no guarantee that there will not be consequences for said speech. Look at the Dixie Chicks. Again, while this may be above your level of thinking, I urge you to think about it.
EDIT: For all of those who claim it is necessary to protest ... what if someone believes it is necessary to bomb a government building to protest. Many people, unfortunately, do - but that does not make it an acceptable form of protest. There are ways to protest that do not involve offending the very core beliefs that millions upon millions have - and THAT is what this is really about.

I dont support the action of flag burning. I would never doi it, even with my great amount of dislike for the country I live in, however I feel that a n amendment on it is far too specific for the constitution and infringes on peoples right to free speech needlessly. give it to the states.

No, it isn't worth our time. We could be working on rebuilding poor areas, eductional issues, job issues, economic development, war on terror, but no, instead we have to worry about whether someone is burning another person's flag.
Isn't that already illegal? I was listening to the arguments for the amendment. Every cause brought up was a case of tresspassing, arson, and property distruction. All of which is already illegal.
I think that legit flag burning for protests are extremely rare.

Yes. I hear the argument from the left, that not to allow flag burning is like not following the constitution, like freedom of speech.
For one, the constitution to me is like other laws. They are not always complete and totally correct. Some need to be modified for new circumstances and events.
I hear that people are being arrested for burning the gay's flag or reading bible verses around the gay pride parade. I'm not religious, but that seems odd that no one can burn that flag, but people can burn the flag of the nation?
The flag may be 'just' a symbol to some people, but many men have fought (and died) for that symbol, it helped them move forward against great odds.
