At first, it seemed that guitars in the U.S. are expensive. However, I discovered that there are a lot of good guitars that are cheap, too. Brand new ones can be bought at < $100, sometimes $75! The ones advertised in the catalogue cost cheaper, i.e., they're easy to pay in installment basis, like 4 payments of $20 only, how's that?
I believe that: "If you want it, there are a lot of ways, but if you don't, there are a lot of reasons."
First things first, i.e., have the guitar first, then, the guitar lessons. How can you have the lessons without the guitar first?

Here's the deal... go to your local guitar store... pick up the most expensive, most rockinest guitar you can find.
Hold it, feel the strings beneath your fingers... but DO NOT PLAY IT!
Now, go home, and remember that feeling... now play the air guitar with an air of authenticity that can only come from NOT knowing how the guitar sounds. No matter what, you are playing the greatest guitar you will ever play.
That is lesson number 1.

eBay...it has everything. If not, I've got a gently used one I've kept in my parent's garage you could have for the right price. As far as lessons, I would suggest the instructional video "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure." Not to be confused with "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey", Excellent Adventure features Keanu Reeves showing off what true air guitar prowess can be.

Try craigslist. There was a great instructional video/documentary on air guitar made in the late '80s. You should check it out. It's called "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure"

I know a really great place in Goborone, in Botswana in Africa that makes air guitars. I got mine from there after I bought my pet giraffe. My giraffe's name is Sparky. He lives with me in my one story apartment. The neightbors don't really appreciate it, though. One time, he even ate their Tabasco sauce. He didn't have a nice time that night. Oh, back to the air guitars, mine has a really nice sound. It is an acoustic, but it does just fine. Botswana's prices aren't that high. I got mine for like, $101.76, plus it came with an amp, too. Although they don't have a website, or a phone number due to lack of visitation, you can fly there.
Much Luck!
Sparky wants me to let you know that he would love to teach you how to play!

Try the thrift shops for a guitar, they have some good prices, and there is always some mother whose children have moved out, and she gets rid of everything, the stuff usually goes to thrift shops or goodwill.

Air guitar is simple.
Pretend like your playing a guitar.
Air guitar is... air.
And the last time I checked, air didn't have a price.

I would think that in the case of air guitar, being an autodidact is sufficient?
