Theoretically, it is possible to overheat a laptop (or a desktop, for that matter) if the weather is very hot and/or if dust collects inside the computer's case. If a short circuit occurs inside the case or screen, the resulting heat can even melt the plastic (this actually happened to one of my laptops). However, for a well-designed and normally operating computer, overheating shouldn't be an issue.

over heating is a main problem in advanced computers, especially for laptops . most of the new PCs comes with heating sensor and will shut down when it heats up. well i wont believe that comment that your friend didn't turn off his PC continuously for 2 years? i think its a lie. there are several instances u've to turn off your computer, such as updating windows, or virus protection, new installation of softwares. and also all computers will turn off after sometimes. at least to stand buy mode. I don't think someone can use the home computer without turning off for 2 years continuously for 2 years. There will be some stability issues with the operating system.

laptops can overheat (my old one would all the time). Most laptops have a temperate sensor which will turn off components before they burn up. If you keep your laptop in a place where it can get good airflow underneath it as well as over the keyboard and any fans then you should be fine.

It is true, computers can overheat, even desktop computers can overheat.

well I have two laptops a toshiba and a powerbook and the powerbook I never have to shut it down unless I want to. On the other hand the toshiba if it overheats will shut down and you have to wait to turn it back on. so no it's not bullshit it just depends on the laptop and what kind of surface you use it on.

My laptop overheats and turns off, but only graphic intensive stuff. I bought a fan that it sits on and don't have that problem anymore.
