Males and females should not be housed together. The male will chase and attack the female until she dies of stress/injuries. If you have a ten gallon tank with lots of plants and hiding places, You might be able to keep them together. Put the male in the small cage for about a month, then turn him loose. Watch him to make sure he does not chase/attack the female. Make sure the female has places to hide and can get food at feeding time. Otherwise, keep the male in the small cage or get him his own tank. Guppies would be a good choice as a companion, or even another female betta, if you need to keep them seperate.
During mating, the male will build a bubble nest. After the female lays the eggs, the male will fertlize them, then spitt them into the bubble nest. He will take care of them and will kill any betta and just about any fish that is in the tank.

Male and female Betta can not be in the same container together, ever! The female lays her eggs and swims away and then the male comes by and fertilizes them. There are some fish that that can be put in with a Betta but another Betta of the opposite sex is not one of them.

I've always heard that they should never be kept together, however, I have a male and 2 female bettas living in the same tank together (granted it is a 10 gallon tank with a lot of hiding spots)
The male does flare up at my females every once in a while, however, he does not pose any threat to them... the only time that either one of my females were ripped up or hurt was during spawning.

I have kept female bettas with other community fish. I have also kept a male and several female bettas together in a very large tank. I know that they are territorial and I think they did OK in a large tank together because of the space.

I've had the same experience, and I was told the only time you can put them together is during mating season. Any other time, it's not safe to keep them together.
I recommend you do an online search about bettas online (Yahoo or Google). You'll probably find what you're looking for.

One male Betta needs 2 females with him to breed with. He will kill just one. I would suggest getting her a platty or a goldfish (not a fancy one) to keep her "company". FYI Most animals Mammals or Fish do not keep companions. The only purpose for the opposit sex is to reproduce.

He will always be aggressive to her. I'm kind of surprised that she's not fighting back. You canNOT keep two bettas of any sex together unless you are trying to mate them.
