Be friendly and sincere.
Know your products.
Be helpful.
Do not beg and scrape.
Be polite.
Be honest.
Be organised.
Give your customers your time.
Listen to your customers and ask what they need.
Ask how they think you could improve your store and listen to the advice without prejudice.
Moulding your store around you may make you happy but probably won't impress the customer. Mould the store around making the customers visit easy and comfortable.

Listen to what your staff has to say... that means asking them what's in need of improvement- then act on it. They are your eyes and ears. If you don't your business will fail.

The head of the company should listen to the most junior member of staff with out the presence of intermediate managers and supervisors.

Make your staff happy and allow them to be individuals (within standards of common decency) and they in turn will create a good happy atmosphere.

Don't ask staff to do anything you wouldn't.

Make sure you know you business at least as well as your most knowledgeable member of staff.

Besides a good inventory at a good price, you need to give the best customer service you can. Have a fair exchange policy, help customers make the best purchase for their needs, not just your profit margin. Give needy customers a price break when you can. Make your shop a fun, friendly place to shop at. Give to charity when you can.

Don't play with a customers intelligence. If you want to sell dynamite for $2.00 a stick, charge $2.00 a stick, not $1.99. You won't be fooling anybody! ( You'll also be making an extra cent per sale! )
