Poop is mostly the parts of food our bodies can't use plus bacteria that we're trying to get rid of. Most animals that thought their own poop smelled good ate it and subsequently died from the bacteria in it. Those that thought it smelled bad didn't and survived to have babies. If by some chance mutation an animal is born that thinks its poop smells good, they usually eat it and die before reproducing.
Evolution at work.
Of course, there are animals that eat other animals' poop, like worms and dung beetles, but that's a different story

It smells bad because of the bacteria your body uses to digest. The bacteria starts the breaking down process. Sometimes, smelly poop is the result of termoil in your digestive system. For example, the bright yellow poop you have during a hang over -- full of acid.

That's not a dumb question. Why does it smell bad? It didn't START OUT smelling bad. What happens inside your body that makes it smell awful? C'mon people, we need to know these things...AND IT'S A FREAKIN' POOP QUESTION AGAIN!

No clue. However, I just bought a special kind of cat food that was supposed to significantly reduce litter box odors, i.e. the stank of poop, and it works really really really well.

Partly becauseit contains sulfur, a by-product of unhindered digestion. Partly because it undergoes a rapid decomposition in your stomach and intestines, and decomposing material combined with bacteria gives off other odiferous chemicals.
