Gossip is more the act of talking about someone or something, and may or may not be true. A rumor is something someone heard, a rumor is a noun, gossip is more like the verb.

Gossiping is talking things about people in an open way and not caring who hears it.
Rummors are like you tell it to one person and it spreads but people are quiet in front of whom they talk about... you know what i mean?
