Alot of people I've spoken to call this an advanced society.But when I ask them why, they say it's because we can build nukes and other powerful weapons of destruction.I've even heard scientists brag about this as a great achievement of mankind.I just don't get it.

If you look at the advancement of society part of that is to be able to "protect"? ourselves from our enemies either real or perceived.

The threat equals the threat. In the earlier part of this century there was very little agreement between the major countries holding the most power. Imperialism, the order of the day. If say the USA had not embraced this sort of technology when Japan were or similarly the UK had and Germany didn't.

I'm not sure that great achievement is the answer more an evil by product of necessity and a desire to conquer.

The more nukes a country has ,the stronger it appears,so other countries will respect it's views & will not dare to attack it.
