Well, first off, the cars seem to run on their own once the feet get them moving (so evidently they didnt have ignitions, starters or transmissions in the stone age)

The gas stations are also use to do repairs, such as replacing wheels.

Also, as with many Hanna Barbera cartoons, a location scene (such as the gas station in question) was added as needed to keep the story moving. Like many cartoons, things dont always make sense from a real world perspective. Sure, it seems odd. Here they had gasoline-combustion engines, airplanes, TVs, radios, elevators, and pwer tools (of a sort), but didnt have things like starters, brakes, windshields, or lightbulbs.

Thats the nice thing about cartoons, there are no restrictions on the story that would make a live action version difficult or impossible. Things like gravity, aerodynamics, the flow of time, skewed perspectives, impossible camera angles, weather, physics, and so on. Just about anything can be done in a cartoon.
Since cartoons are not 'real' the creators dont have to follow the restrictions imposed by real life.

From what I can remember there has never been a gas station on the Flintstones. I have watched the show since it was first aired. Now there has been drive-in diners.

Their feet are only used to start the car - if you notice, once it is moving the feet stop moving. Other than that possibility, I have no idea! Good observation!

Sometimes Fred has to leave the car running and run inside for a sec. He doesn't want to shut the car off because his carburetor is messed up and it won't start up easily. Fred is a blue collar worker and poor. He couldn't afford a better ride
