I had the top of my ear pierced through the cartilage. It made a strange popping noise, and hurt pretty badly for a couple of weeks, but healed well.

Whatever you do, don't get it done with a piercing gun. I had it done that way and it hurt like hell for the longest time and I had to let it close because I had so many problems. I still have a lump of scar tissue. A piercing gun will blast through the cartilage and shread it. A needle will cut through cleanly. I had mine done at a piercing studio with a needle later on and it didn't hurt too bad. Healing was miserable. I never had trouble with infections or anything, just swelling, burning and throbbing. I had it done in late March and it is still tender to sleep on at times.
