This question has been decided so many times that it is redundant. Why people keep bringing it up is beyond me. Flag burning, while stupid and disrespectful, is freedom of speech. A flag is an object, not a person. If you go out and buy a flag and burn it, you are a free speeching idiot. Make sure you get a permit because you can't just burn anything you want. If you take down someone else's flag and burn it, that's vandalism and those laws will apply.
People who believe the punishment for damage to objects should be damage to the person or their life or whatever need to re-evaluate their priorites. Peoples lives come first. It is better to put up with a stupid opinion than it is to regulate all opinions and people and ruin their lives over a stupid opinion.
Besides, believe it or not, many people who burn the flag are just trying to get attention to the fact that many of our so called freedoms are not being respected. While I totally disagree with their decision to burn the flag, I have to respect that they have the same right to freedom of speech that I do and just hope some of their opinions are valid.

It has taken me a long time to come to a conclusion on this. I don't like seeing the US flag or any other country's flags being burned. It seems unpatriotic.
All that said, I think we have way too many laws in this country as it is. This is no longer the land of the free. The government continually makes laws so that they can control us-- and Americans are letting politicians do this. I don't need the government to sanction what I can or can't do. I honestly think that it's absurd we need more amendments to the constitution. I don't think the founding fathers expected so many stupid people would inherit the land.

I know you're all upset about the attacks on America. But responding by removing freedoms is a very drastic and wrong direction of your efforts. Peaceful protest is NOT a threat to America. When you allow terrorists to convince you that you need to crack down on freedom -- they have won. I respect the flag as much as any of you do. Believe me. I don't burn it. I don't plan to. But I don't want to see peaceful American citizens thrown in jail. And I don't want to see the current situation used as leverage in a debate that ought to be conducted rationally and logically. Seriously -- if we are going to modify the constitution and remove part of the First Amendment, we need to think that through -- not act out of anger or fear in the heat of passion. We don't need an amendment to the constitution. We need to show the enemy that we will not stoop to their levels. In America, we don't put people in jail for protesting against the government. That's what they do in Afghanistan, China, or Iraq. Here's my solution to the dilemma. The main cause of flag burnings since the end of the Vietnam war has been protest over flag burning laws. Flag burners in general are not "Anti-American." The people who want to "protect the flag" have incited more flag burnings than anyone else. So. Keep the law the way it is. Now and then someone will burn a flag to protest a war, or a law, or something. We should be strong enough as a country to accept criticism and allow some people to offend us now and then..The only alternative is to crack down on it. Modify the constitution. Start putting people in jail. And as soon as we pass that law, thousands of people will burn the flag peacefully and in public, to show their disagreement with that new law. And they will all have to be imprisoned. Isn't that a horrible prospect?

Seems to me......if you feel like burning the flag of any country.....you are shown a high degree of disrespect and disregard, for what it represents for the majority of the country's citizens......therefore it should be illegal and punished in some way!!!!!!!!! Maybe they would like to be loyal to another country's flag! I don't really understand the purpose of it, other than to disrespect its country and its people.
After reading some of the other answers.....I am now beginning to realize that it comes down to: "HOW MUCH DOES THE FLAG MEAN TO EACH INDIVIDUAL".
While some people may think it is "just an object" and not get offended, some others may prefer to protect it and respect it for what it means and to desecrate it would be a serious attack on the rest of us.
Sadly I am thinking that a lot of people mistakenly fail to realize what the flag symbolizes.
There are a lot of things wrong in this country, but there are more good things than in a lot of other countries!!!! Burning the flag or a government building is not going to fix anything!!!!!!! but anger your brothers and sisters!!!!!! if you want to express yourself about something you don't like with the government and you must burn something........PLEASE BURN SOME RAGS OR SOMETHING OF "NO VALUE" TO ALL OF US.
We still hear you! We are in this all together!!!!

Of course it's disrespectful, but isn't it wonderful to live in a country like the United States where if some idiot wants to burn a flag he won't get shot to death for doing so. It is almost like the ultimate symbol of any country and WE are given the ultimate freedom of being allowed to burn it without consequence. Look at all the protests around the world, do you ever see them burning their own flag? Heck no, imprisonment or worse! This is from an old sixties protester who believes our freedoms always need to be safeguarded. I would support your right to be a fool and burn a flag to make sure that my beloved book classics aren't burned. Think about it.

This is the US Senates most blatant disregard of the will of the US population to make flag burning a crime. Every State has voted to support the flag amendment and over 1/3 of the Senate doesn't vote in the way their State has supported.

How is this a big issue? How many times does this even happen - it's just a platform for politicians to stir people up and get them to vote for them. I'd make certain I knew what else this politician "stood for" - is he/she full of hot air, non-issue issues like this one?
Check this out:
Flag desecration is a rare occurrence. It represents no threat to our way of life. Amending the Constitution — making the first change in history to the Bill of Rights — ought to worry all of us far more than the occasional and unusual political protest of burning the flag.
Proponents of a flag protection amendment claim to be patriots. In fact, they are proposing limits on our right to disagree with the politicians in charge, which is often the intent of the rare public flag-burning. Certainly, burning the flag is offensive to most Americans; but a law prohibiting dissent ought to offend us far more.

Flag Burning is a right in a free country. It is just a ploy by the Republicans to distract attention from all the other issues during the lead-up to the elections. Don't let them keep you from asking questions about the validity of the Iraqi War, the deficit, the loss of our constitutional rights, the over dependence upon foreign oil, the corporate corruption, lobbyists, and so on....

The way I look at it is this..simply stated...
You live in the United States..You hate it? you don't like living here? THERE IS THE DOOR..move out.
Burning the flag is an immature thing to do. You might as well stamp your feet and throw yourself on the ground. You think you are making an 'example'..what you are making an example out of is yourself for being too lazy to take the appropriate means of construtively criticizing your government . And in the United States be GLAD that you CAN do that withoug being hung the next day..you think you have it so bad here...try some other country then.
So again - you dont like it..then LEAVE!!!

Why would someone want to burn a flag. I think that whom ever does is saying that they don't care at all about their country. I think they should have their voting rights taking away. If they hate the country so bad that they would burn the flag that it stands for, I think they should leave.
