A custom dating back to Quaker founding days: When a couple move into the neighborhood, a welcome wagon type of get together would be called where all the neighbors would bring a pound of sugar, flour, or whatever, to help stock up the new neighbors cupboards. Nowadays, a church event, where you bring any essentials to add to the new couples' stock.

A young couple just starting out, or maybe a family in need, a new preacher, everyone gets a pound of something, like flour, meal, sugar, butter, etc and bring it to them. Usually everyone delivers it at the same time. Kind of like a surprise shower.

Well in the good old days a newly wed couple-would no longer be alone in their humble home 5 minutes -before nosey neighbors would come "pounding" on their doors with all kinds of really important stuff-crock pots-crockpots-more crocpots

My interpretation is the old fashioned custom of beating the stuffing out of someone who gets in your face. Synonyms: pulping, trashing, *** whuppin', teh list is endless.
