Sounds more like a raccoon to me. I bet it's looking for mites under the bark. Best bet is a trap, for those little guys are tricky & will easily manuver around a fence.

Depends where you live, but could be a variety of animals. Deer like to mark trees by rubbing the bark of of them, so do bears. Or you could have a termite orant problem. After termites or antskill the tree, they will continue to eat at the tree, usually starting with the bark. Best way to get rid of them is get rid of the tree. Bears and deer; repelant.

It would help to know the species of tree that is being stripped. For example, some species of ornamental birch trees shed their bark naturally. Is the tree dead or alive. Woodpeckers can quickly strip a dead or dying tree of bark in their search for insects.
You might want to take samples of the bark and pictures of the tree to your county extension agent for analysis. It could be a disease specific to a particular species.
The definitive answer is likely to be found by consulting an arborist. You may have to pay for one to come out and look at your tree(s), but since they add value to your property, it may be worth the investment.
Good luck with your problem.

Sounds like you might have a beaver problem and I have no idea to stop them. Bears will sometimes mark trees as well in order to sharpen their claws and spread scent from glands in their paws. Best thing I can tell you is make plenty of noise outside because wild animals are mostly afraid of people. Just don't get too cocky with a bear!

in the winter, deer and rabbits will eat bark off trees. You can whitewash the lower trunk of the tree, or as high as they reach, that will repulse them.
A good method of preventing animals from eating tree bark is also wrapping the trunk into a wire net or barbed wire.

It may be a porcupine. Call your local forest service rangers and they will be able to help you set humane traps or preventitive fencing.
