The best thing to do is sit them on the bike and make sure they can touch. If it's a gift just casually go over by the bikes and let him mess around then check and see which one looked best.

Generally speaking. A 22 to a 26 inch bike is what your looking for. To find out what will work the best for the recipient of your bike. If your buying a mountain bike, you will want something where he can reach the ground while straddling the crossbar only. The bigger tires will be easier for him to pedal (in smaller gears of course). If your buying a BMX bike...A good rule of thumb is that his feet are just an inch or two off the ground when he is seated on the bike.

Another tip, make sure he doesn't have to lean to much or bend his arms too much to reach the handlebars. His arms should be able to comfortably reach the handlebars from the seat but a lot of newer bikes have handlebar adjustments on them.

PS- The most common mistake I see is when people buy a girls bike for a boy, and vice versa. Some are obvious to choose for the gender but a no fail way to tell is that on girls bikes...the frame (middle bar of bike) is normally curved to allow less pressure on the tires in turn making the ride smoother. Boys bikes have a straight frame.

I bought my 9 year old a 20 inch, too small. Took her to the store, and a 24 is about perfect.
