This depends on so many factors, such as:

* Your age
* Experience
* Cost of living in your area
* What you're asked to do (cook, drive, organize art projects, etc.)

We have two younger kids and pay $10/hour for a high school grad who is very active with the kids and handles dinner. People still in high school would generally get $7 an hour. Younger people would probably get $5. But one high schooler is so good, she would get paid more. (For instance ... do you get the house really clean before you go the way she does? This impresses people and is the kind of extra service that can boost your value. Trust me, when people start wanting you before everyone else, demand pushes up what you can charge.)

At night, when the kids are in bed, we pay $5/hour just to cover someone's time.

I wouldn't recommend charging anything less than $5/hour. For one kid, age 7 (i.e., easier to take care of than my two little kids), I wouldn't recommend more than $7/hour.

Nothing if it's less than 20 minutes for you may need it yourself. If not it depends on a lot of factors including the capacity and willing of paying for that of your neighbors. Don't loose their friendship for some bucks AND don't loose your time working for nothing. Test them : ask them some service and see how they behave... Do you get it?

I think it depends. How much would be your minimum? If the kid was no trouble to take care of then I don't think it could be too much. Also how long did you take care of the kid? That could come into play as well.

My neighbor kid said to me, "I don't care, whatever is fine," when I hired her to do pet sitting. When people are faced with that answer they have no choice but to pay market pay or better.
