I think it's because baseball is a slow moving game so they need something to keep them busy.

As someone who has played baseball, I know one reason is that when the game is really close or it's a tight situation it's sometimes nice to be able to bite down on something really hard. It's also fun to blow bubbles, although if it pops and gets your face messed up you look like an idiot.

i think it's because they can't spit dip on the field anymore, so they chew gum instead of dipping
