I think the point of the American dream is not the material things, exactly, but more the idea that people have the total freedom to get these things, and the freedom to work for better.

"Assassins," the musical by Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman. Seriously, check it out -- but if you get the CD, get the 1991 Off-Broadway Cast, not the horrible 2004 Revival version. (The 2004 version has Neil Patrick Harris doing a very good turn as the Balladeer, but the rest of the cast ranges from good to ridiculous -- the guy playing Guiteau sounds like Wally Gator -- and the 1991 recording has the scene with Booth and Oswald.)

I've never thought of the American Dream in material terms. Rather, I've always looked at it as the opportunity to achieve both material and non-material items. I may not die with a million dollars, a great family, or peace and satisfaction, but no one can keep me from trying to get them.

Yes. The intangible idea not of material wealth itself, but the raw potential to be born into any socioeconomic status and move into any other socioeconomic status. In other words, the big house doesn't pop into my head, but what does is the fact that the big house could be owned by someone who was born in a shack with no running water who worked hard to give their children what they did not have.

Absolutely! It is the great experiment in human freedoms, life liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The material assets you mention are all just results of that pursuit, but the real treasure is the freedom which allow it.

YES! Liberty!! Especially religious liberty! We live in one of the few countries where we are not persecuted or killed because of what we believe. I am a Christian with several friends in other places that have such a hatred for religion that they have to live in fear for their lives every day. I hope I am not the ONLY person that doesn't think of material things.
