I think you are from US.? because Americans are extraordinarily care about having good teeth by orthodontics among people in the world. I have read some article before that tell the technology of medical treatment in a dental clinic in US is higher than one in JPN . But on the other hand, the fee for fixing or filling a cavity at the dental clinics in US is very expensive, especially for the people who don't or can't buy medical insurance for dental treatment services.
So some Japanese who are temporary living US ( e.g. students) avoid visiting dentists while they are in US. In the past, I met not a few young Japanese people which went dentist to fix their cavities and to do orthodontics after they come back from US to their home country, Japan because fees are much cheaper + can use national medical insurance.

There are many reliable dentists in Japan, and they can fix cavities at much lower price than the price suggested at most dentists in US. I can recommend my family doctor of Japanese dentist near my home in Japan to anybody including my friends.

Recently in Japan, more people spend less and less money for their clothes and tend to wear simply in everyday life. but I am not sure yet that this change is just recent trend or a change of culture. And the price of nice & good clothes are cheaper than ones in US since the quality of clothes exported from China inproved. A lot of clothes are imported from China to many countries in the world. And shipping cost from China to Japan is cheaper than to US because China locate next to Japan )

You're mistaken.

There's nothing wrong with the dental care received by Japanese people.

What YOU are referring to is properly called 'orthodontics' - and it's just not considered important in Japan! You actually usually get adults getting braces, not kids, because it's just so unimportant to people's actual health!! Adults get them IF they want to, but there's no pressure!

If you're American, then you will have been constantly bombarded with images that make you think you need straight, shiny, WHITER than white teeth! But 'natural' teeth are rarely straight, rarely ultra shiny, and NEVER WHITE!! That's all cosmetic nonsense, and you PAY for it! You don't seem to realise that it actually makes you look a bit weird - unnaturally straight, glowing white gnashers, fake tan, and an oddly straight nose!

You can call it jealousy if you want, although it ISN'T - but that seems to be the standard American excuse for everything bad that's said about America!!

Because many other countries don't pump their people with fluorinated water like here in the states. (Fluoride is not good for you in large quantities). I would rather have bad teeth and live long lives like many Asian cultures do. And have you ever heard of Rodeo Drive and Hollywood - talk about access! You need a reality check or medication......(Bad question)

What Japanese people do you encounter? I live in a community where there are a lot of Japanese people and I don't see anyone with bad teeth that would be noticeable enough to ask this question.

the main cause of the bad teeth is the lack of fluoride in the country's drinking water supply. the government ruled this as unhealthy many, many years ago.

also, japanese dentists are some of the worst in the world and they don't come cheap.

i've seen some badly discolored teeth (various shades of yellow, beige, brown and grey ALL in one person's mouth!) and 'rickety fence' syndrome almost every day as i live in this great nation now.

Well,I'm not so sure about the Japs, but my teeth are crooked because of the ghosts that live in dentists offices. We all know their offices are haunted-all those teeth pulled from peoples skulls-it's horrible-plus I spent all my money on a new trunk monkey!

First, not all countries have fluoridated water. Much of the USA does.

Second, not all people assign the same level of importance to the appearance of teeth when judging looks.

the sad truth is, it isn't just one nationality that does that, people take care of what ever is most important to them, maybe they have felt left out and they try to make up for it by buying thing that will get them attention.
