No, you need something that has give so you can bounce off the ropes. Regular rope would break, even if it were covered with duct tape.

Yes, but you have to be careful what type of rope you use. The WWE uses real rope. Most smaller federations use steel cable through rubber tubing, because its a lot less likely to snap.
Most companies that still use traditional rope, use manilla rope that is at least an inch thick. Most hardware stores list the strength index of various ropes they sell.
I've seen both steel cable and traditional rope snap in matches.
(That's why wrestlers grab the top rope in their right hand when they run the ropes...if it snaps they won't go head first out of the ring)
I prefer steel cable because it last longer and requires less maintence.
*Also if you're thinking of building a ring, you'd probably be a lot further ahead to first get some training at a local wrestling federation. Building a safe ring will cost you a lot more then the training. Even if the ring is safe, not knowing what you're doing can get you hurt.

Yes, they can, and yes, they do, use regular hemp ropes for the rings. There are feds that use steel cables, however the ropes are just as prevelent.
What the fed I used to be with does is use regular nylon ropes and use colored tape to make them look different.

Yes and they used to use regular ropes. Thats why they call them ropes. If they had always steel cables, they would have called them "Steel Cables."
But unless you have a proper ring settup you will hurt yourself, so don't be a yard tard.
