According to a report today by the Associated Press, "Eleven Sunni insurgent groups have offered an immediate halt to all attacks — including those on American troops — if the United States agrees to withdraw foreign forces from Iraq in two years"

So, brave Yahoo respondants.... what do you think? The U.S. has already stated its desire to pull out once Iraq's government is strong enough to sustain, govern, and police itself. That can't take longer than two years. Isn't this a win-win situation?

Beach_Bum makes two good points.
I believe we can minimize the claim the insurgents would have that they forced us out. The best way to do this is to point out how we're trying to make the Iraqi gov't strong enough so we can leave.

Make it clear to the insurgents that they have to renounce their terrorist methods and start participating in the legitimate political process.

Beach_Bum.... great answer!

Well I'm all for removal of the troops but I see 2 problems with this (going by only what you have told me btw)

1. We can't make deals with the insurgents. That is for the new Iraqi government to do, not us.

2. The question remains: are they willing to recognize the new Iraqi government as the sole controlling power within Iraq even after we leave?

What do you think of the Iraqi insurgents offer to stop attacks?
(I asked this question 2 hours ago)

This is actually kind of funny. They did the same thing to us in Karbala last year... AFTER it became evident that the base there was going away, the local s**t disturbers started yelling VERY LOUDLY that the "U.S. MUST GO"!!!... then these same people would stand on the rooftops yelling about how THEY were responsible for running off the Americans.

Anyone who watches the news (Fox or CNN) can see that we are reducing our presence as we planned on doing all along and slowly replacing our troops (and coalition troops) with Iraqis... as it should be. Now you have the enemy offering "an olive branch" of sorts "IF" we leave in 2 yrs.... the world can plainly see we will have withdrawn the majority of our troops in that period of time.

If it is true it is Win-win, but we also need to ensure they know that if they start up after we leave, we are coming back, and they should also vow to help crush the rest of the insurgency.

you must understand that those folks have been killing one another since dirt was invented. we are not going to stop this in a couple of years, its all they know how to do. If you want to make change then you must support a long term plan until a couple of generations has passed.

Beach Bum is right. Might be a trick.

Only time will tell, and I bet Al Quida isn't one of those groups.
