Originally it was Nicholas Cage with Tim Burton directing, but the studios pulled out and had to shell out $20 million to Cage for a movie that was never even made that wouold have featured Superman and Lois Lane ready to parent a child right before Superman is killed by Lex Luthor. After that, there were several unsuccessful attempts to produce a worthy script. Next, the team featuring Singer as director came along and demanded an unknown actor to play the part, feeling that a well known face would not sell to the public as well for believability purposes. Routh was actually put on hold for 2 years, working as a bartender, until they gave the green light.

Because the director of the film Superman Returns is said to have wanted a "nobody" to fill the part of Clark Kent/Superman. He wanted a man who wasn't well known in Hollywood and the only big time jobs that Brandon Routh had done were a few spots in televison shows and a Christina Auguilera video.â¥

I think if they did that people would just consider it a movie based off of the Smallville series. It really has nothing to do with the show other than Superman.

too bad for tom welling though. he makes a wicked sweet superman. the fog sucked tho.
