Because extremists are, be definition, those with the most passion about their causes. They make the most noise, get the most press, and write the most letters. Plus, they are reliable voters. Most politicians think if they can get the base, they can win; so, the ones the extremists vote for are, not surprisingly, the more extreme candidates.

It's because the masses are lazy and ignorant. Because the people, as a whole, have no idea what's going on and what's true or not, the only way to get elected is to be extreme.
The only thing that gets attention in this country anymore is extremism. You have to claim something is evil, or somebody's lying, or someone's a commie, or someone's a neocon. It has nothing to do with knowledge or fact anymore.
Just look at what Gore is doing now. He's running around claiming we're all going to die and the country will be permanently ruined in like five years, when ALL the actual science and history of the world says otherwise. But nobody cares about the facts. What side people take with global warming is completely determined by their politics.

It's not run by people on the extreme. The extreme right is composed of groups like Aryan Nation and Christian Identity. The far left Is made up of various anarchist, Marxist, Stalinist, and Maoist groups.
There's only one actual leftist in Congress, Bernie Sanders, and he's an independent.

Because Americans have been conditioned to only support 2 parties: The Democratic and Republican. And Demcrats and Republicans are further conditioned to have oppossing views on important issues, to corner different segments of voters.
The media likes to report political moves that are not boring. So poiticians with extreme view get more airtime.
We vote for charismatics media hounds by default.
So, what we get is leadership that is has strong views, one way or the other and makes bold moves while in office.
The election process in this countries needs to change, I think.

Please note that it is "extreme left and right polticians", not "extreme left and extreme right politicians", because the ones on the right, such as George Walker Bush, are not extreme and what's more, even if they WERE extreme, they'd be much better than the ones on the extreme LEFT.
