They jump into a situation of owning a pet , ie a betta splendens especially, and havent the slightest idea of what to do, what to feed it, how often to change the water, how big the aquarium should be, what companions are best, how long the fish will live for and how many times they should wipe the fishes hole after it does a shite. Because they are idiots and feel if the animal dies oh well they can just go buy another one. Especially fish, they actually do need to be taken care of and not just thrown in a tank or even a bowl (which really no fish should be in and I don't know why petstore even sell them), and the fact that they can't hear a fish cry out in pain they care even less about them.
