Some job postings will specifically say do not check; we will contact you. However, I have a disability rehab (for bipolar, mental health), counselor saying this CAN GET A JOB . . .

Checking on the status of your application is something I suggest that all applicants do. This puts your application in the lime light and shows that you are really interested in the position. I would suggest 1 follow-up phone call to see the status, after that move on.

I interview people on a weekly basis and it really helps out to have a person call to follow-up because it enables me to look at their application again.

The only minus I can think of is a applicant that can be too pushy or demanding. I once received 8 voice mail messages from one applicant that I never called. That is why I suggest the professional 1 follow-up call and not 8 stalker calls. :)

Unless the listing specifically says not to check, keep calling. This can tell the potential employer that you really want to work and you will be a good employee.

call once. you'll get an "answer" then. if they tell you we'll call you, didn't get it. if they give you a specific time they'll call you back, looks good. most people won't necessarily hire someone who has bipolar/mental health issues. not really a sought after characteristic you know. might actually be to your detriment.
