I have had two answers, but if the Greeks did it, then who gave the Pacific Ocean its name? They didn't know about the Pacific

The Atlantic Ocean is the second-largest ocean, covering approximately one-fifth of the earth's surface. The ocean's name, derived from Greek mythology, means the "Sea of Atlas." The oldest known mention of this name is contained in The Histories of Herodotus around 450 BC (I 202).

Hello dear!
I am glad to see that at least two have opinion and correct direction for Atlantic Ocean!
Greeks used to know Atlantic and it is proved because Plato, in his books Timeo and Kritias mentions the Atlantic Ocean as "Atlantic Sea" as the "large sea" between the Herculean Columns (Gibraltar) and the large continent. Similarly Diogenes, the Cynic philosopher mentioned it to Alexandre the III!
We know that the Greeks are sailing the Atlantic at least for 4,000 years (with proves)

Regarding the Pacific, although archaeological findings and traditions are proving it, still, official and academic history are collecting data before they present it!

The Greeks, of course, named the Atlantic Ocean.
Balboa in 1513 was the first European explorer to find the Pacific Ocean and he claimed it for Spain. However it seems that Magellan gets credit for naming it Mar Pacifico (Pacific Ocean) because of its apparent stillness

"Atlantic" means strong and powerful. In the middle of the Atlantic, especially the North Atlantic, you can get some pretty tall waves.
