True, but only in the northern hemisphere. In the southern hemisphere, moss would grow on the southern side of the tree.
Reason for this is that moss doesn't grow on the northern side of the tree (nothing to do with magnetism), it grows on the side of the tree that get's the least amount of exposure to the sun.

It's true that it grows thickest on one side, and it's always the same side. That much I remember from boyscouts. But I can't remember if it's N, S, E, or W. I don't think it's N, though.
