Yes.
Cheese graters.
And a small seam ripper.
That's how I've been doing them.
You first grate the area a bit (It really hurts your arm, though.)
Then, when you see the little white threads, use the seam ripper to lightly remove the blue fuzz.
Sometimes I lightly bleach the area.
It helps.

hey all you have to do is turn them inside out then scrape only the place(s) you want to be torn (with some sharp object, I'd use scissors!). Then when you see that the center of the place your cutting is open only about half a centimeter then cut any lose threads and buff the place with sand paper or pumice stone. Then after that just snip some of the seems on the top of the place and wash the jeans!... if their new jeans then remember to wash them in cold water!

Try using a sharp, metal nail file. The big ones that are actually for your foot. Or try a cheese grater on the fine side. Also, take a dropper (the kind you dispense small amounts of liquid in) and spot bleach around the areas that naturally wear down. Such as, the waist, pocket trims, and edges.

Try a fine cheese grater. Make sure you protect your hands coz once you go through it hurts something aweful. Then wash them a bunch of times. Should give you the desired effect.

Lemme know how it works for ya.

Yeah make a small snip with a scissors, then rip with your hands. Throw them in the wash and let them fray!

I knew a guy that used a shotgun, with small shot.
After a couple of well-aimed blasts, he then washing the jeans for a couple of hours on low, with some river stones (those round stones found along a riverbank, or at most garden shops).
