As I understand it the World Series - the game between the winners of the National League and the American League - is named after the original sponsers of the series in 1903 The New York World ( an American Newspaper ).

Well not only Americans compete/play. For example the Boston Red Sox have David Ortiz (aka. Big Papi) and Many Ramirez... Those are not exactly American names. So techniquely people from all over the world do compete in baseball. Besides anywhere else in the world does not like baseball as much as Americans and if they tried to play the Americans we would always win. So we make the competition a little tougher by trying to beat ourselves.

Because it is just a name....But even such as that is, let me give you some more rationale ...
Back when the world series started and was given a name, there were not other countries that had leagues. So the best team in America was by default the best team in the world.
I would imagine that you could still make that claim now though there are leagues in Japan, Korea, Cuba etc to name a few. The best players in the world all come over to America to play. That fact cannot be debated. It would only go to reason that the best team in such a league would be the best team in the world...

Last time I looked the Toronto Blue Jays still played their home games in Canada. And Canadians are slightly different than Americans.

Did you bother not to look up the previous 7,465,870 times this question has been asked?
The World Series is older than the World Cup. Deal with it.

Well, technically their is also the Toronto Blue Jays, but, they don't represent the rest of the world. Good question. I guess we have to ask that question directly to the commissioner of MLB Bud Selig.
