The simple answer....It enhances the ride. I ride both with a helmet and without a helmet, depending on conditions and my mood. It does not make me "an idiot" or "stupid" to ride without a helmet. It does bring into question the intelligence of those that throw out such insults.
The real issue to most bikers is about the right to choose. I agree helmets can protect your head in the event of an accident. But Gloves protect your hands, body armor jacket can protect your elbows, shoulders, spine. Armor lined jeans can protect your butt. Where do you draw the line between government required protection and the riders right to make a personal choice. The government has mandated Seatbelts in automobiles, what if they decide that you must wear helmets in cars? Does that seem silly? What about Convertibles where you have no overhead protection. Do you want lobbyist and politicians to choose what makes sense?
Everyone seems to have an opinion about helmets, those who ride and those who don't. I would like for those who ride be the ones who decide. It is no different than someone who has never been in a car deciding what is an acceptable speed limit. They tend to think slower is better because it is safe. Would you want speed limits to be lowered to half because, non-drivers decided it is safer?

Statistical speaking the chances of an injury with or without a helmet are about the same... The difference is the type of injury received during an accident. If you wear a helmet your chances are greater of breaking your neck during an accident. Where as not wearing a helmet would almost certainly gain you a major head injury. But to wear a helmet or not and ignore all other types of protective clothing is just as stupid as not wearing a helmet. I prefer to not be a road pizza during an accident and receive the equivalent of third degree burns over my body... It is better to wear all safety items than taking a chance of dying stupidly in a minor accident. Helmets are not the only answer to riding safely but they area start...

There is no reason not to wear a helmet, except the feel of the bugs and rocks in your face. Nothing like that at 90mph to make your whole afternoon.
On the other paw, I strenuously object to nanny-ism ... some jerk in the state capital who never got closer to a bike than to snear at it through the window of his limo telling me what I need to do to "be safe."
Safe is an illusion, especially on a motorcycle. I choose not to have brain damage added to the list of injuries at my autopsy, but that's just me. The bureaucrats need to keep their dang regulatory pudding-snatchers off my hobby.
So helmets, yes. Helmet laws, hell no.

I always wear a helmet - it is the only way to go. I do not understand people who don't wear them, or that wear those lame-o fakie helmets. Even if you don't have any brains, you should still be concerned about getting your face scraped off. Anyone who wants to argue should go to www.rotten.com and check out the dude that lost the entire bottom portion of his face in an accident. NO THANKS.

A helmet, especially a full face helmet will truly protect head injuries, as shown by numerous studies. Some riders say that they rather be dead than injured. I disagree.

Exactly!
And not just ANY helmet, a FULL-FACE helmet.
After having parts of my face pieced back on in the hospital, I will never wear anything less than a full-face.
People are often concerned about how cool they look on a bike, but they'd look really cool with a missing nose, no teeth, a broken jaw, and all the flesh scraped off.
Protect your bean! and your beautiful face :o)

I ride and I wear a helmet, that is my personal choice and it should remain that way. I have never looked down apon or thought the guys I ride with are stupid for not wearing one. It is all personal choice.

Who is more at risk? Me not wearing a helmet and obeying all traffic laws, or ilikecheeze's friends with all the safety gear riding at speeds in excess of 100mph?

Because a "helmet" is not going to save you if your cut in half ,drunk drivers , lost of limbs or if your neck is broke
