Jake's character was gay all the way that's why he only searched out male sex even when he was on his own. Heath's character was bisexual, so he could find satisfying sex with women too. But his true love was Jake's character, so he would have been happier with a man and would have lived gay quite happily if the world had been different. ~sigh~

I think that Ennis was gay and Jack was somewhat bisexual, but mostly gay.
I really think that Ennis was 100% gay because you NEVER EVER saw him really getting interested with a woman at all. Not his wife, not his girlfriend, no one.
But you saw Jack flirting with his wife early on, obviously attracted to her, even if that connection faded over time. I think that Jack was probably a bisexual who just prefered men.

Does it matter? To me, their relationship transcended gender. To me, it was one of the most tragic love stories of all time...not much to do with sex...and really the fact they were two guys was pretty insignificant. You could have substituted two women, a married man and a married woman...come to think of it, it was kindof like they were married to a societal intolerance of anything not heterosexual...wow I'm feeling smart today!

it's supposed to be a romantic(ish) film. I think if we try too hard to answer the question, we'll steal some of the romance.
