Yes you can buy any harddisk and an enclosure for the hard disk with a USB port. Once you install the hard disk in the enclosure connect the USB to the laptop and windows operating system will detect a new hard drive.

If you want an internal hard drive for the IBM notebook you are out of luck and you need to use only IBM branded now its HGST ( Hitachi Global Storage Technology) hard drive

Sure! I use a thumb drive (1GB) and an external HD (80GB) to store all kinds of data seperate from my ThinkPad.
