In my bathtub, the peice that you pull up if you want to fill the tub is broken. Now the tub drains very slowly. The peice inside is broken but how do I get it out?

You may have to unscrew the toggle (underneath the faucet on the tub) and take it apart in order to remove the piece at the bottom of the tub. Otherwise, try to use needlenose pliers to pull up on the broken piece and rotate it out. You can buy a replacement kit at the local hardware for less than $20.00 I think. Good luck.

The trip lever is broken or has come loose. There should be two screws beside the lever portion. remove the two screws and the trip lever assembly should pull up and out. A plastic or brass plunger should come up with the assembly. If not then you are going to have to take the tub waste apart behind the tub. Once you are this far into the project you might as well replace the whole tub waste. Having not done this before you might want to call a plumber. Not the easiest problem to fix.

There are three pieces to open the drain. The lever which you refer to, another rod that is attached to this lever and the lever that is attached to the drain. There is an access plate that the top lever passes through. This is usually held on by two Phillips screws. Remove it and take the broken piece to the hardware to see if you can get another one. Also on the drain you should be able to unscrew the plug and remove it to drain the tub.
