I grew up in the Bar Harbor Area. I remember being there as a kid, and I've also lived there as an adult, so I have both perspectives. There are certain things that I enjoyed, and other things that I found boring for kids. I remember liking driving up to the top of Cadillac Mountain, going to Sand Beach, eating lobsters, looking in tidal pools collecting crabs and other sea life, and of course lots of homemade ice cream. There aren't any amusement park type activities, so pretty much all fun comes in the form of exploration and nature appreciation. There are also some great places to swim in the lakes that dot the west side of the island. These used to be "secret" places that only the locals knew about, but now there are signs for the public to find them.
So if you have kids with you, I would definitley hit Sand Beach, Cadillac Mountain (let them run around and explore on the top of the mountain), Otter Cliffs, and be sure to find an oppotunity for the kids to see live ocean life such as lobsters, crabs, seals, and even whales. Bar Harbor is a great destination for whale watching, and you are almost guaranteed to see whales. Be sure you go out on a catamaran, as you and the kids are less likely to get sea sick.
