Perhaps "Fields of Gold" by Sting a.k.a. Gordon Sumner. I think that one is very appropriate.

You're right, the reclusive author J.D. Salinger has explicitly stated his works would/should never be made into a movie, since after all, his work is too internal to be conveyed properly on screen.
However, if there is to be a soundtrack, I suppose some indie rock "coming of age" -type song would fit. How about, Elliott Smith: Happiness from the album Figure 8. That song would especially be appropriate for the end.

I could never imagine that book being made into a movie. Some just aren't meant to be movies. (Of course, many of those in that category have already been made books, but I digress...)
But, I say Do's and Don'ts by Boom Bip because I'm a selfless plugger.

"Comin' Through the Rye" is the only possible choice even though others may be preferred.

i think Matchbox 20's Unwell would be pretty close. i hope they don't make a movie out of it, Salinger is famously reclusive and protective of his novel, it would suck if they disrespected him like that.
