Most Europeans I know don't particularly like Americans. The image we get from you (in general!) is that the United States politics is damaging the whole planet. Your president is a power-horny megalomaniac who says things like :"you are either on our hands, or we see you as the enemy"
That doesn't make him sympathetical.
America can arrest our citizens in OUR country if the US thinks that we commit a crime against you. You can be arrested here for selling pot to an American citizen. My god, I think that is so incredibly tiranic!
What we see on the media about Americans is that the average is pretty oldfashioned in many ways. Conservative at least, and very patrionatic. Like you realy think that this is the promised land and you are the special god-choosen people.
The first colonists (and your government) killed almost all the Indians. But that wasn't the end, now you want to controll the whole world, because your government seems to think that your standard should be the standard in the whole world.
Like a new Roman Empire.
I don't want to live under that tirany!
Also I don't get it that most Americans go wild about the subject sex, but everyone can buy firearms, and then you complain about the violence that goes on and why there are highschool shootings like the one in Columbine.
You have a big censorship. The so-called freedom of speech is only going so-far. I have heard from a girlfriend of me, she moved to the US a couple of years ago, that the news you get to see is very limited to what WE get to see. That forms your opinion on the world also. I think you are more manipulated by the media then we are. And off course, we are also manipulated by the media. Still I think it is much less to what you have to face up with.
We see that most Americans are overweight to the point that even the chairs in airplanes had to get bigger. Everything seems to be focussed om materialism. A lot of people speak out from religion, but don't live by the respecting rules. Because the same people are often a forestander for the death penalty, for example, and will think that shooting a tresspasser is the right thing to do.
Hypocritical.
Please don't get me wrong!! I know I sound harsh.
I think that there are many many Americans who are openminded and very nice people.
And there are a lot of European @ssholes.
People are people. There are just differences in culture, and politics. Generally speaking, that are not allways that great!
Ah yeah, one last thing, reading a lot of answers and questions here doesn't make my opinion any better.
Sorry if I have offended people here. I have just given my honest answer, and again, in generalisation. I bet there are milions of great Americans.

Most of the Americans I have met have been delightful. Polite, thoughtful and accomodating. That's from when I was out there last August.
Sometimes the media portray you as loud and overconfident/brash. But Brits tend to be a bit more reserved.
Some of the vocabulary is confusing. But that must be the same for you too.
See you soon.

iam just one english person and you are just one american.
i believe everyone is different and should be treated as an individual. people make mistakes. intelligent people are very important for a successfull society, they elect and fight for that right. for a rich country to arrogantly invade another country for the benefit of its own purposes is shameful. its like a spoilt child and usa is percieved as a spoilt child. then again just like the states, the invasion was objected by the learned of the west.
its the government that should be watched , not necessarily the people. iam positive there r gud yanks

A lot of Canadians perceive Americans as idiots. I think it's mostly because your Presidents recently have been... let's say less than competent.
I think the general thought is that a lot of Americans perceive Canadians as people who live in igloos, get around by dogsleds, and say "Eh" all the time. This would lead Canadians to perceive Americans in general as idiots.

They re-elected a liar, thief, and a war criminal as their president.Apologies to those Americans who did'nt for Bush.I honestly think the american people are brain-washed,they know very little about other countries,& worst of all, they actually believe what their president tells them, they don't seem to realise that any-one who gets to the White-house has had to lie, cheat,& take millions of dollars from people who expect a return on their money.'Hail the Chief'!!

Very insular - for some reason americans seem to think that their country is "the world", that's it's OK to kill thousands of people in case your over privileged way of life is threatened. I think that America is probably going to be responsible for the end of the world (the real one).
Oh and they can't take a bit of teasing - in relation to your angry over reaction to people commenting on your spelling mistake (they do have a spell checker you know.)

Not active enough against Bush's venture in Iraq and politically isolated. Also using more than your fair share of the world's resources, and insensitive towards other cultures. Individuals I have met are all lovely people, so I am speaking generally!

Hey look at us? We really are no better. But honestly, I think in the cities of america there are these ultra cool, beautiful sexy people, like on the telly. In the suburbs are normal, 2.1 kids families, and in the middle of nowhere they chew gum and keep a shotgun under their pillow.
Never been there though of course.

the media casts every country in a bad light if it sells papers etc, I spent 2 weeks in the US touring around the countryside in New England & found nothing but nice ordinary people, same as here in the uk. citys around the world never portray the general population.ps.(i'd rather trust your lot than those who are supposed to be our friends in the EU)
