A lot of the previous answers give the right answer. There is no need to first sit and then change positions. The baby is independent of your movements and you can't wrap the cord around its neck by your movements.
Round ligament pain can happen if you move suddenly while lying down, either to sit up or turn over, but that has nothing to do with the health of the baby and goes away if you lie still for a few moments.

That is an old wives tail. 90% of the time the umbilical cord will get tangled anyway. There is a kid in there swimming around and tying it in knots. I have given birth to 4 healthy children and all of them had their umbilical cords around their head or neck and it was never a problem. Don't worry about it. It is a common thing in pregnancy, nothing to worry about.
What you will want to be careful of is sudden movements when lying down or trying to get up from lying down. As your uterus gets larger, the round ligaments which hold your uterus in place, get stretched and can get a "kink" in them which can cause a sudden sharp pain (like a knife in your gut). This is no cause for alarm, it is very normal, but it hurts really bad. My guess is that this is where the old wives tail originated from.
Congratulations on the baby. Make sure to eat well, stay healthy and enjoy your baby.

I'm prego for the fourth time. It could very well be true. Perhaps that is why my midwife made it a point to tell my hubby how to help me up out of bed. Midwives would have a more difficult time if the cord is wrapped around the neck. Makes sence to me. You should be careful, regardless.

Well I never heard that one before, you should sleep however you feel comfortable and turn when ever you want. Your baby is doing somersaults of it's own in there so nothing you do will make that worse or better. Just relax and don't worry, did you ever see a pregnant animal worry about it's position? no? well there you go.

No it is not necessary to be that parnoid and disrupt your sleep to switch all the time. And when you "rest" lay on the left not the right. Also remember this is the only time before the baby arrives to choose when to sleep so rest up!!!

I don't think it's really necessary. The umbilical chord becoming wrapped around the babies neck is hereditary. That's what my Moms' doctor told her. Both of my kids' had their cords wrapped around their necks.

myth, the baby is floating independant of your body. you turn even when you don't know it. sleeping on the right side is a good idea after you eat because the food can make it to the intestines quicker(ask your doc,he can explain it!) congrats and best of luck!

Your mom is scaring you for no good reason. I slept on my back throughout my pregnancy. OB/GYN said no problem, as long as I didn't get dizzy. It's difficult to change positions, but you use common sense and shift any way it's easiest for you.

Don't believe the wives tales. You can sleep however feels comfortable. You probably won't want to sleep on your stomach, but your body will let you know that anyway...
