Ok,, you want the real answer,,,, or just all the mess everyone has said so far???
I work in Alaska.. plenty of bears....and I also work at the North Slope of Alaska,,,plenty of Polar Bears...
A bear,,,,,,,,,,,, can run down a horse,,a elk,, a carabou... and most assuridly... YOU...or anyother human if its hungry enough...
So. run is like sounding the dinner bell...... if you have a tree.... a big big,,,, strong tree,,,,, try and get up it...... the stronger the tree the better....but,,,,, there again,, bears can climb...and they can push the tree down if it s small.......
Most bears attack,,, if you come around their cubs...... if you hear...see.... smell a bear.....BACK TRACK.... especially if you see bear Kills or scatt... (dung) fresh....... they are close....
If you run into a bear..... you use the run.. for last... 1st... stand tall . raise your hands up tall and hollar as loud as you can.... REAL LOUD>> this may. stop the bear.... if that doesnt work.. if you have a backpack on.... drop it.... if there is food in it... back away from it..... even if there is no food......back away..... start looking for that Tall Strong Tree.....
Last,, if the bear,, is still coming..... get....quickly....
There was a young lady 3 yrs ago in Alaska.. that was attacked by a black bear.... she fought for hours... running around trees ,, using large limbs to hit the bear... she was messed up,,, but she lived... (she was also a U S Marine)... true story.....
If a bear attacks at night,,,, ,while you are in a tent or camping... fight to the DEATH,,,,,,,, the bear will be trying to kill you....No Kidding.....
Just be careful... ask the park rangers about bear sightings.. also talk to other campers or hikers........
Stay Alert ,,, Stay Alive.....
Good luck.....
