Absolutely... But it depends on your skill level!
1) As you stated the laptop has "issues" I presume merely networking the laptop to the desktop is NOT an option...
2) Therefore, you should remove the HD from the laptop and install it in an external USB shell (around $15-$30)...
Once done, the drive can be attached to any USB equipped PC and accessed as an external drive for file retrieval!

There are a variety of methods to copy data from a laptop to a desktop pc, depending on how each are set up, and your technical abilities.
1. If the 2 PC's are networked, just use windows explorer to drag files from the laptop to the desktop.
2. Buy a USB drive (sometimes called a thumb drive), and connect it to the laptop. Drag files to the USB drive. Romove the USB drive from the laptop and plug it into the desktop. Now copy the files from the USB drive to the desktop hard drive.
3. (most difficult). Order a 2.5" to 3.5" HDD Adapter Kit (google this). Remove the hard drive from the laptop, and configure it using the above kit on the IDE chain of your desktop. Copy files from the laptop HDD to the desktop HDD.

They do sell USB cables that allow you to plug into a 2.5" laptop drive and access the data on the drive or if you plan to do it enough you can buy a small drive enclosure to do the same thing. www.CDW.com has different options

First you need to pull the hard drive from the laptop - then you need to get a LAPTOP to IDE HARD DRIVE ADAPTER - this is very easy to use:

It costs about $10.00 and will be one of the best tools you could pick up.
