Try your local library. Bring in whatever you have and the librarians will help you identify it.
To get the missing medals, apply at the National Archives website:
http://www.archives.gov/veterans/evetrecs/index.html
it says it is for military records, but section 7 allows you to apply for the medals.

Contact the World War II museum in New Orleans, Louisiana...they were recently designated the official museum (national) by Congress as the "World War II Museum".
You can find them on the web and they have a curator who will help you donate valuable items like medals, etc.

Try to contact Channel 11 fox news. I had a friend that was looking for a great grand father and they help him find what he needed to know.

If you have copies of the award paperwork you can ask which ever branch of the military he was in about getting them officially awarded. It will take a good deal of time and is hard to get done, but if you push it you Can be successful.

Go to the direct source; the WWII veterans. They should be told "Thank you" anyway for their sacrifice. As for memorbilia, go to your local historical library.
