Well, you could say that a turtle is naked if it doesn't have a shell, however the shell is part of the turtle's body and therefore if it didn't have a shell it would be missing a body part. A turtle would not be able to survive without a shell because the shell protects it from predators such as dogs, wolves, etc. as well as weather. It would be impossible to remove a turtle's shell without hurting it because the shell is actually fused to its backbone. The closest turtles to not having shells are softshell turtles. They have grainy, soft shells and are therefore preyed upon more easily than other species of turtles.

My answer will be homeless. reason they have a shell that protect themself from predtor! and when it rain or hot outside they have place to go inside and keep them warm or cool. that how turtle live becasue they have shell that make them live longest. but if without them they homeless might not live long to feel safe. just like human that need a place to live like shelter to live longer without them not live long. That is a darn good questions. haha.

The top shell, or carapace is also the turtles spine. The last joint in it's neck is embedded in the shell, and it continues that way almost to the tail.
