I had a fascinating lucid dream once. In the dream, I was on a blind date, and it was not going well. The woman was unpleasant. I told her, "It doesn't matter if we don't like each other. I'm just dreaming all this and you're not real." She was offended and insisted that she was real. I said, "No, I'm dreaming all this, and I'll prove it. I'll make your dinner vanish." And her plate vanished out from in front of her. She was quite upset.

True story.

I had several of these so called 'lucid dreams' or some call it 'controlled dreams.' All it take to have one is for you to remember that you're in a dream state which is not an easy task but a very rewarding one once you 'conquer' it. The next step would be maintaining that state of 'awareness' by focusing on an object or a part of your body like the hands. Once you mastered this two basic steps then you'll be ready for many fantastic adventures in your dreamworld. You can do some research on this area and I assure you there are a lot of reference materials out there waiting to be discovered. Goodluck in your sleeping adventure.

Active lucid dreaming is an aquired skill because it's difficult to realize you're dreaming without waking yourself. There are a couple cues that i know of that you can use to help tell when you're dreaming. You just have to keep them in mind.

First, when you can't stop peeing no matter how much you go, you're dreaming. Not only are you dreaming, but you ought to wake yourself up and go pee.

Second, You can't read in your dreams. You can pick up a book, act as if you're reading it, and gain the knowledge in it, but if you actually concentrate on the characters they won't all be recognizable letters, they won't make words, etc...

If you try to keep these things in mind and check them occasionally, you'll find yourself doing it in dreams too and then you'll be able to do whatever you like in your dream. Keep in mind that you'll get better at manipulating your dreams with practice and eventually you'll often just "know" you're dreaming without having to "check".

I have a psych. degree and we learned that at about 18 years of age a person should have developed cognitavely enough to have lucid dreams on demand, but I'm 27 now and still can't. Sometimes during a dream I can change the course of events purposefully, but I've never been to dream about whatever I wanted to yet. I guess practice...
