Happy 4th of July! Here are some games/activities we always include in our backyard celebration.

1. Swimming pool soccer-right in time with the World Cup. Take a small sized watermelon and grease it with sun tan lotion. Drop it into the pool. Now divide into two teams (usually adults vs. kids) and play soccer. The object is to score points by moving the melon to your end of the pool and, without using hands, lift the melon to the pool deck.

2. Water balloon croquet-this started as a fun protest to our neighbor's annual (wear white shorts) croquet game. While they set up a rather formal game of croquet, we fill water balloons. I usually spend 3 hours each 4th filling small water balloons which I transfer to wagons and wheelbarrows. At some point in our get togethers, either her house or mine will launch the first attack. Then the water assault begins. Now, while it took me hours to load the amunition, a 100 water balloons will only last about 10 minutes! A tip: Periodically spray the fileld water balloons with PAM or another aerosol oil to prevent them sticking together.

3. Many times, we'll host young guests that are afraid of the fireworks. I always set up a television and dvd player with lots of silly cartoons for them to take a break inside and watch the show. It is also a great place to cool down.

4. Homemade Ice Cream and cookies-Each 4th we make homemade ice cream and invite anyone with a plate of homemade cookies to join us for dessert.

5. Bicycle parade-If you have several kids on your guest list, encourage them to bring their wagons, bikes and trikes. You provide red, white and blue decorations for them to use. Crepe paper, ribbons, construction paper, colored tapes and flags are great. Once decorated, have a parade in your street. I usually give first place ribbons to everyone...best spokes, best handlebars, etc.

6. Using the cards from the Cranium game and a giant dry erase board, we'll divide into teams and play. The teens really have fun.

7. Turn on the music and dance.

These are just a few. Have fun and be safe.

Do crafts, play pin the tail on the donkey (or topic appropriate) then play the fishing recreation. carry a sheet in a doorway, have youthful ones toss the fishing pole over the sheet and characteristic someone pin the giftbags to the fishing line, tug like a fish. each and every youngster receives something and its a interesting way at hand out the giftbags. understand that youthful ones are merely satisfied to play and run round. We many times turn on a topic appropriate action picture on the top of the social gathering so youthful ones can relax and watch it even as they look ahead to persons or they could run round and merely have interesting.

Some of the "old" ones I played when I was a kid in the late 40's were: horse shoes, badmitton, sack race, potato race (have a potato in a spoon and see who can cross the finish line first without dropping the potato), three legged race (have two people and tie one leg of each person together; the couple who crosses the finish line without falling first wins). Oh yeah, the watermelon seed spitting contest - who can spit seeds the fartherest.

Volleyball is always a big hit. It can be played with any age group, young and old. Another good game is crocquet. It is very fun and not phycially harmful in any way. Whatever you do, wear sunscreen!

We always have a bottle rocket war. It rocks! My Pastors have a huge field behind their house that has pretty tall grass...so we dress up in camo, and pack a sack w/ bottle rockets and lighting sticks. Let the games begin! Just a tip: Wear old clothes and googles, because you will get burns in your clothes, and you might need your eyes one day :)

Anything involving water!

Have a couple of tables set up w/ card and board games, too. Good for sitting and cooling off.

If you have a pool, and it's nice out....games like Marco Polo and pool volleyball are fun! Also, water balloon games are a great way to cool off.
