Do not let HP and Gateway prices sucker you into purchasing a cheaply built laptop. Cheap PCs are made with cheap parts and HP is no different. If you want to save money and have loads of problems, HP and Gateway is what you're looking for.
Most people will go for Dell or Toshiba. They're medium-grade laptops for a decent price. Stylish with many nice features. Unfortunately Dell is known for their hard drive problems within their laptops and Toshiba is going down in quality since the company discovered that you can keep the price the same for the consumer, but save money by building your laptop cheaper. But still, they're not bad buys.
The best on the market is Sony or IBM. But they do come with a hefty price. IBM's design stems from its popular use in the business world. So a lot of quality is placed into their line of laptops. Sony has always been good with top-notch technology. So why wouldn't their laptops be any different? Unforunately, aside from the high prices, IBM isn't very stylish and Sony will only allow you to use Sony compatible parts with their machines.

for me all branded laptops are the same you get manufacturers warranty and customer support, if i were to buy a laptop i'd consider where am i going to use if it's jus tfor email or surfing then anyone would do but for other purposes you'll have to look at the specs. for quality i've used dell, compaq, hp, fujitsu, acer, ergo and toshiba well all of them are good but i like toshiba more than the others
