You need to get a real good nail puller. Don't scrimp and get a cheap one; you don't want to rip up half the wood on your deck or chew big craters all over it. This is a specialized tool designed for just this purpose. Get one which can handle the size nailheads you have and which will not cause excessive damage extracting an embedded nail head.

If you plan on refastening the deck with deck screws you might try screwing in the new screws first. This might snug the decking down tight and maybe cause some of the old nails to pop up just a bit which would make them easier to get out.

have the right tool and keep track of the pulled nails, put them in a bucket so they don't get lost in the grass. Why do you have to pull them? you could burn them and later clean the nails from the pit.
