Clean it, vacuum the interior, wash the mats and put a bowl of baking soda in the car (you can use a little cheesecloth on the top to keep it from spilling). In a couple of weeks, you should notice improvement. Baking soda in the sun works especially well to remove odors.

First you should take out the seats and then the carpet.
Second have the seats re-upholstered and then go buy some floor carpet for your car...
If your cheap then get the seats and the carpet from the junk yard. It might not be new but it probably smells better than what you got.
Usually, water is the main stinker when it comes to interiors. If you smoke and then say your floor carpet gets wet, combined with the heat that accumulates after sitting for long periods of time, it tends to make your ride smell funky.
PS
Change your air cleaner to your vents.

There is an air freshiner called OZIUM, Febreeze all apholstered and carpeted surfaces, and spray some of that air freshiner in the car. It takes out any kind of stink.

It could even be something like the air filter being really dirty too besides the interior aspects of the vehicle.

You may have a water leak. Check under the trunk may and see if there is any water in there. A moldy trunk and carpet will stink up the inside of a car.

My daughter's cat got loose and wet all over my car when we brought him home from the vet. I was told to cut up apples and put them under the seats. It worked --- car smelled great - and then I traded it in!
